TREE (Third Residential EcoVillage Experience) began construction in late 2012. Fully subscribed, the neighborhood was completed in Fall 2015 with a total of 40 households.
All homes are extremely well-insulated, with continuous fresh air ventilation supplied by Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs). These homes are remarkably comfortable, yet typically use 80-90% less energy for heating and hot water than typical homes in the northeast. TREE also made a choice to not use any natural gas, due to concerns about fracking, so these all-electric homes are partially offset by a 50KW solar array, plus additional panels on homes, as well as solar hot water.
Members of TREE come from all over the U.S. and the world, with families moving from as far away as Malaysia, Italy, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, and other states.
The four-story Common House includes 15 living units, varying from studio apartments to spacious three bedroom designs. Adjacent to the Common House is a beautiful pond for both wildlife and recreation, and a community garden. TREE members bring tremendous energy and enthusiasm to their long-awaited dream of living in community.
About Ecovillage at Ithaca:
Three neighborhoods totaling 100 households, 175 acres of land, a sauna and two swimming ponds, lots of kid play areas both indoors & outdoors, gardening space, a vegetable CSA, a u-pick berry farm, volunteer-run optional community meals every week, many other amenities, and lots of neighborliness. It’s a mix of plenty of privacy and the chance to connect with people when you want to. (I find it a great place to come home to after a busy day, as well as share with family and friends.)
Ecovillage is a self-governing housing co-op. As a renter, you go through the resident membership process (which includes a tour, attending meetings and social events, and staying overnight at EVI) and are encouraged to attend monthly neighborhood meetings. All residents are expected to abide by the decisions of the co-op, much like any other housing complex. Also, all residents do 2-4 hours per week of community work of choice (for example, cleaning community areas, shoveling snow helping with the community meals, etc.). This is a great way to meet people and everyone benefits from the work done by the other 200+ people who live in the village. The daily benefits of community definitely outweigh your individual effort to create it. The beautiful environment and the great sense of community make EVI an extra special place to live. .
$1,400,00/month rent includes parking space and laundry. Other fees including high speed internet (currently $35) are extra per month. Common meals (if any) are also added to the rent each month. Rent does not include personal phone line (if desired) or electric and any other utilities regarding the home.
