Earth Arts offers Spring Program for Ithaca Homeschoolers
February 14, 2014 -
Every Monday beginning March 24, EcoVillage Ithaca will host the Earth Arts Homeschool Program for children age 6 and older. It’s hands-on, outdoor environmental learning at its best, for both village and greater Ithaca kids, and registration is now open.
During each 6-hour session, mentors share cultural earth-based traditions from around the world, through lots of games, stories, art, songs, adventure, and team-building activities. Participants are grouped into smaller (developmentally appropriate) clans for part of the day. Our teaching emphasis is to guide participants to discover answers for themselves, using their innate curiosity as powerful motivation for experiencing, learning about, and caring for the environment. Our goal is for each child to feel comfortable in the woods; come to know the gifts of the land in all seasons; and respectfully harvest materials to make native crafts, tools, food, and shelter.
In an experiential learning environment, the children will be studying many Physical Science skills in thematic blocks such as Native Trees and Plants, Geography and Mapping, and Weather. As always, various learning abilities (i.e. reading and writing skills) will be worked with lovingly and skillfully by the Earth Arts mentors.
Time: Mondays 10:00 – 3:00. Session Dates: March 24 – June 16 (11 sessions, no session April 14 or May 26) Instructors: Simone Lackey, and other guest instructors. Early Bird Registration (Before March 1): $330-$420 After March 1: $350-$420
